Perseverance is this guy’s middle name.

Most probably.

Or else he wouldn’t have had this sparkling success: from a rickety old push cart chinese fast food joint to a brand new fully furnished mobile chinese fast food join.

Check out more details about Chandu, on of the budding entrepreneurs in Mangalore. This is written by Harsha Raj Gatty, a 1st student MCMS student at St. Aloysius College, where I serve as a guest lecturer.

Absolute New Way to Make Money Online June 12, 2009

I’ll let you in on a juicy little secret to have $1000 in 5 days.

No shit

And you don’t even need to do anything.

This is a tried and tested way using which I collected $500 in 2 days. Sounds very creepy but it’s true.

And now you too can do it.. regularly!

Here’s what you need to do:

The next time you come across the term “make money online” and any of its various synonyms collect all the loose change you got and put them in a piggy bank!

Yes, that’s it!

I assure you with the number of “make money online” articles on the internet $1000 in 5 days is a piece of cake.

3 days if you’re on Twitter, Facebook and Myspace!

That’s the thing, folks. There is so much stuff about making money online that you would expect every internet junkie would be browsing from his fancy yatch.

Not that it is not possible to make money online. There are some real internet entrepreneurs who have made boatloads of cash on the net.

But seriously, do you really think they will let on their secrets to the public. Who would want more competition?

The point here is most of the time you see “make money online” it is nothing but a scam in disguise. Here’s how the pitch goes:

  • You are led in by a huge red headline that is almost as big as the first paragraph
  • The heading makes a promise you cannot neglect
  • In the opening the guy says he was just like you, even worse
  • He convinces you to think he drove pick-up trucks, slept in trailer parks till he stumbled on this
  • All the while his “clients” have been shouting to you from the other side of the page that his product is the absolute best
  • Then this guy tells you what his product can do to your life, how it’s life changing etc
  • Move on to the part where he says he’ll give you a bargain
  • Then he adds free stuff worth $499 or so
  • He also adds a 30 day money back guarantee

Result: you cannot wait to whip your wallet and give this genius your money. You just want to have your hands on the product.

Trust me, you’re in for the virtual ride of your life.

I’m not saying the guy will take your money and disappear. He will send you the stuff. Instant download links and that kind of deal.

But most of the time the product is just worth enough to be used as toilet paper.

And the worst part is your ego is hurt and you don’t know what to do. Accepting that you have been ripped off is worse than hell. So you tell your friends why this thing is the best thing not only after but even before sliced bread.

So I tell you this: stop being a mark and do something real. Look out for those real entrepreneurs we were talking about. Check what they did and are doing. Don’t be afraid of hard work.

Looking for short cuts is not happening, boss. Internet is full of claims of short cuts but most short cuts are just highways to hell once you’re on them.

Compared to these sneaky guys, my little idea is honest, cheap and completely risk-free. Although it’s also a short cut so just remember what I just told you about short cuts.

PS: You can start your piggy bank endeavour right from this article: there’s $6 in this article if you save $1 for every ‘make money online’ found here!

PPS: I was bullshitting about the $500 in 2 days; I would rather spend those 2 days writing some copy for clients or teaching at the institute

Nalin Kumar Kateel: Legend Killer May 17, 2009

Wrestling fans would find many similarities between reigning  WWE champion Randy Orton and Mangalore’s own Nalin Kumar Kateel.

Orton, a multiple times WWE champion, is touted as the ‘legend killer’ having made his way to the top by taking on and defeating many legends in the wrestling business.

Nalin Kateel finds himself in a similar situation.

I admit, calling Congress’s Janardhan Poojary a legend might be a bit too far fetched but none can discount the reach and influence of the man as far as politics is concerned.

And Nalin Kateel has just had his first taste of vanquishing a behemoth.

Janardhan Poojary and Co. thought he had it easy when BJP announced Nalin Kateel as the MP candidate.

Same mistake most of Orton’s opponents did owing to Orton’s perceived inexperience in big matches.

However, Orton and Nalin Kateel proved they had what it takes to win the big matches – focus, determination and a thirst for winning. There is another important thing going for both, keep reading to know what that is.

The Numbers

But first, here are the numbers: of the 10,15,498 voters polled, Nalin Kateel got 49.16 per cent of the votes while Poojary bagged only 45.18 per cent.

49.16 per cent on a first run! That translates to 4,99,385 voters putting their trust in a relative newbie.

Poojary’s Future?

Janardhan Poojary, on the other hand, had to face anti-incumbancy factor plus local geo-political backlash that has be dogging him for the fourth consecutive time since 1991, when he faced his first defeat after four consecutive stints as Mangalore MP. This was also the time when he served as a union minister.

With his win-loss score at4-4 since 1977 and the recent humbling by a what many veteran would call a political newbie has put a serious question mark Janardhan Poojary’s political future.

Nalin Kateel’s Journey

Nalin Kateel’s journey to glory was not without hard work and determination. The 42 year old newly crowned Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha member’s website states that after his father’s death, Nalin Kateel took the responsibility of managing his family’s affairs upon himself. He began his career as a civil contractor and worked his way up.

For the time being, Nalin Kateel will be known to Mangaloreans as the youngster who vanquished a legend. As the celebratory crackers and sweets die down and he assumes the duties attached to his chair, all eyes will follow his progress. I hope Nalin Kateel will do justice to the trust DK people have placed on him.

Ties of Blood and Sweat

And now for the one important thing that’s going for both Orton and Nalin Kateel without which one can argue that they would not have come so far.

That is (drum rolls please) THE FAMILY!

Orton is a third generation wrestler whose dad and granddad worked in WWE for years. One of the chief reasons Orton got a break as a big guy is because of this connection.

Nalin Kateel also has the backing of a different sort of family, but a family nonetheless. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Nalin Kateel has been a pracharak (full-time worker) of the RSS for 12 years since he was 18 where he was recognised for his organisational skills, particularly for religious events.

When it’s Time to Play The Game…

But this family backing does not in any ways undermine the individual achievements of both players.

Orton has vindicated the trust placed on him by his bosses and the masses few years ago and has consistently over-delivered. This is only through his sheer talent and abilities.

Nalin Kateel is currently where Orton was few years back. People and the bosses have placed immense trust on this fellow. He knows there’s a thin fine line between the desires of the masses and the desires of the bosses. Hopefully, our new MP has enough steel, courage and determination to walk this line for 5 years.

I, along with the people of DK, wish Nalin Kateel all the best for his newly launched political future. I hope he follows the footsteps of one Mr. Randall Orton and makes everybody proud in the years to come.

Mangalore Election Results 2009 May 17, 2009

It was an election full of surprises from the beginning in Mangalore.

It was a surprise when reigning MP of Mangalore Sadananda Gowda decided to run to Udupi to contest Lok Sabha elections. It was a surprise when BJP announced that they will field a relatively unknown Nalin Kumar Katil against the local behemoth Janardhan Poojary.

All these signs plus some of the ugly incidents that involved the right wing in Mangalore gave a distinct impression that BJP is a party in desperation, with projected miserable performance.

The biggest surprise of all happened yesterday (May 16) when it was announced that Nalin Katil has won over Janardhan Poojary with a stunning margin of 40,420 votes!

Now that’s something most of Mangaloreans did not expect. I suspect even Nalin Katil himself did not foresee such a huge margin. This goes to show that individuals are not exactly bigger than the party in Mangalore.

It was the party the people voted for, it will be a mistake to assume that it was Nalin Katil’s charisma or whatever that won him the election. Mangalore and Udupi have always been the stronghold of BJP and right wing for sometime and the trend continued this elections as well.

Even though not as stunning and striking as Nalin’s victory, the triumph of SadanandaGowda of BJP in Udupi was also a mild surprise. There was a genuine feeling that his opponent, Jayaprakash Hegde of Congress, would give Gowda a run for his money and actually has a chance to win. Again the voters have voiced their choice for a party not an individual.

Another surprise is that the recent ugly incidents that were perpetuated by the right wing have not had any significant negative impact on the voters. On the contrary the voters have come forward in droves to voice their opinion through votes. We should not forget DK has one of the highest voter turnout percentages in the country (72% turnout this year)

Final analysis: Right wing still rules and party is bigger than any individual in undivided South Canara.

Anyways, I wish Nalin Katil and Sadananda Gowda a very fruitful term and hope that the development of the districts continue unabbetted. Mangalore-Blore roads, Surathkal-Mlore roads etc etc., Nalin has a long day ahead in his office. ALL THE BEST!!

OMG.. Kannada Death Metal Band March 10, 2009

OK I confess I did not see this coming so soon.

We have a Kannada death metal band in Bangalore and I must say that I’m seriously impressed with their efforts as of now.

The band that has me floored as of now is Dhwesha – a 2 member death metal (I’m serious) band from Bangalore.

On the surface, the 2 musicians – Ajay Nagaraj and Somesha Sridhara – look like 2 young guys who have an “identity crisis” one expects from black tshirt wearing slightly long-haired dudes from downtown.

But nothing can be far from truth and no one can be far from a crisis about their identities than these 2 young and talented pioneers. Slowly but steadily they are carving a serious identity for themselves with a strange mix – some good old Kannada mixed with good old death metal music.

Now I’m a fan of growling vocals and brutal riffs PLUS a fan of SPB era Kannada numbers. So for me this is like the mixing of two of my favourite things, which I always thought as very distinct entities, something that can never be combined in a satisfying manner.

However, Dhwesha has, to a certain degree, succeeded in doing the unthinkable. Their 4 recorded tracks are a treat to the ears.

What is even more fascinating is listening Kannada language in growling. My goodness, these guys have done a fantastic job at this. And know what is the best part? Kannada does not sound alien at all in growling vocals accompanied by heavy guitar riffs and drumming. In fact, it sounds like Kannada was always made to be naturally incorporated in the death metal scene some day or the other.

Speaking of the band, their effort is terrific for a 2 member band. Obviously, they used synthesizers for the drums while their myspace page says Somesha is on the guitars and Ajay on Vocals.

Also, they seem to have their basics in place and come across like guys who know their music and are not afraid to show it. Thier influences in the inital days have been typical: Maiden, Priest, Metallica etc before moving on to more brutal music, finally landing at the Scandinavian and Florida metal scenes, where they claim they felt at home. The band attributes Vader, Amon Amarth, Obituary as their biggest influences.

Why Kannada? The band members claim they got the idea from Norwegian bands. They reasonsed “if those guys take their Norse mythology so seriously why can’t we take Kannada and our mythology more seriously.”

This thought is evident in their recorded stuff with the track “Ugra Narasimha” relating the story of Lord Narasimha punishing Hiranyakashipu for tormenting Prahlad.

All in all, a very noteworthy effort from the lads from Jayanagar and Arrikere. And they plan to continue in the same vein. Keep up the good work boys; we are with you!

To listen to their music visit Dhwesha myspace page

PS: Dhwesha is looking for a drummer so if anyone interested can contact them through their myspace page.

Tribute to a Hero March 5, 2009

Ok,  so this is a blog about Mangalore so what am I doing with a post that seemingly has nothing to do with Mangalore?

Well, the answer is simple. A great part of me was shaped in Mangalore and while I’m on the topic of shaping I also have to mention one man who has had a profound influence on my life.

That man is: Stone Cold Steve Austin!

And this year, Stone Cold is going to take his rightful place in pro wrestling history by being inducted into the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame.

For the uninitiated Stone Cold is a professional wrestler who was active during the period of 1996-2003 in WWF (I still refuse to call it WWE).

And ironically those 7 years were my most definitive years as in ‘96 I had just finished SSLC and was looking forward to joining college. And at the same time Stone Cold burst into the scene and captured all our imagination like nothing else.

1996 saw Stone Cold win the King of the Ring and with his acceptance speech began the Austin 3:16 era. Frankly speaking, I missed this year for various reasons.

I caught up next year with Austin feuding with Bret “The Hitman” Hart and losing a match that catapulted him to stardom. By next year he was locking horns with none other than his boss, the vindictive Vince McMahon, who resolved to make Stone Cold’s life a hell and screw him out of WWF championship.

McMahon’s reasoning was he did not want a rebellious anti-authority figure like Stone Cold to be the champion and represent his company.

But Stone Cold would not have it that way. He became a multiple times champion and usually at the expense of McMahon.

Although pro wrestling is a work, I admit I was (and am still) a major Stone Cold Steve Austin mark!

And this one guy provided me, and us, the confidence (and the stupidity) to take on the authority. Many of my suspensions in college have had direct relation to one Mr. Stone Cold’s professed attitude.

I have moved on, by the way :)

But even today, Stone Cold’s appearance in the now crappy WWE ring is a treat and brings back good old memories.

And I also admit, I have not completely abandoned Stone Cold as my all-time greatest hero and I don’t think I ever can.

That is because a little of Stone Cold is still left within me that makes me rebellious and anti-convention, like he professed, and it is likely that this will be the case all my life!

Nonetheless, I wish my hero a great future and no one could have been more happy that Stone Cold is getting inducted in the WWF HOF next month than I.

While on the HOF topic, there is a great speculation about who is going to induct good old Stone Cold into the HOF. Vince is keeping this bit as a secret as much as possible and I can bet my last rupee that Stone Cold is also enjoying the situation, playing along with Vince.

Personally I have very few people who I would want to indust Stone Cold into the HOF. Chief among them is none other than Vince McMahon as he is the one who was a big part in building the immortal Stone Cold persona. I know Vince does not involve himself in HOF ceremony directly but I guess he can make an exception this time.

Other candidates are Undertaker and Bret Hart. These 2 have had as much share in building the Stone Cold persona as Vince. Stone Cold’s legendary match with Bret Hart catapulted him to stardom and his matches with Undertaker shoved him to super-stardom. These 3 make my ideal candidates.

Certain people I would NOT like to see induct Stone Cold into HOF: The Rock, Triple H, Ric Flair, Good Ol’ JR, and Shawn Michaels.

Rest is upto WWF!

A very memorable Valentine’s 2009 February 14, 2009

I must admit that that this has been a very memorable St. Valentine’s day for me.

For starters, it’s after 4 years I have been without a date or a person to think of seriously on V-day.

But my love life apart, this V-day has been most memorable for various reasons.

Chief of them being the fact that all roving eyes were on Mangalore for the next incident-to-talk-about that comes from my city.

Sorry folks, that’s not to be.

Mangalore was peaceful, thanks largely to the excellent police force who do rise to the occasion when the need arises. And today was one of those days in Mangalore where you’d be on the streets and couldn’t avoid seeing a cop at every nook and corner.

Hats of to our city police!

That apart, it was also a memorable v-day because of the fear and loathing that beloved Ram Sena people had created amongst the youngsters in the city.

I went out in the afternoon and, you won’t believe, in a city crawling with couples there wasn’t a single couple out in public today.

I hardly saw one or two in the whole day. And trust me, in an average day I see at least a dozen couples openly displaying their love. Today was a day when I dint see any couple. And by that I mean a guy and girl together.

I seriously felt that all the girls in the city had united under umbrella and decided they’ll not provide the so called moral brigade absolutely any reason to create havoc. So along with the police force I also credit the girls to have taken such a wonderful and thoughtful decision.

I stationed myself at a friend’s shop today for an hour at the busiest junction in the city to see how many people come out – absolutely no one! The businesses have been hit badly – not only fourists and card shops but general business also were hit pretty badly. If there is no crowd on the streets where will the business be?

I hope the moral brigade have made their point and are satisfied by the havoc they have created.

By the way, I had been to a pub and was pleasantly surprised to find a couple of girls in the crowd. That’s daring! My respect goes out for those girls. They rock!

Good friend, neighbour and my favourite punching bag, Vivek Pinto, has authored a very good post on the pink chaddi campiaign.

I think his post sums up the general mood of those of us disgruntled with the whole pink chaddi campaign (but not disgruntled because we are in the sangh parivar, we are disgruntled because that’s the way we are)

Read his hilarious post here: Muddy Chaddies

Media and Pink Chaddi People Creating a Behemoth February 12, 2009

History will always remember the media and the pink chaddi brigade helped turn a little known Muthalik into a national celebrity.

Now before anyone of you get an idea that I’m anti-this or anti-that let me clarify – I don’t care.

As far as I know, the attack on pubs was a deplorable incident and the whole idea of culture police is just insane.

But I’m not impressed with the new pink chaddi campaign – a non violent way of protesting Ram Sene, as the founders call it.

The reason being I’m of the opinion that history teaches us something and those who ignore it are bound to repeat it.

We don’t have to go very far in history – the publicity given to Babri Masjid, Mumbai Riots, Khalistan, Terrorism and many other deplorable incidents have turned unknown people into mass celebrities. And that is what will happen with this initiative.

Look at the havoc already – a relatively unknown person, somewhere in in an obscure part of Karnataka, is now on the top of the minds of people – thanks to the pink chaddi brigade and the media.

I have nothing to say about our media who are so hungry for anything within 50 km radius of ‘controversy’.  They’re doing their job – however skewed be their definition of their job.

But I disapprove of this whole pink chaddi campaign. This man Muthalik thrives on publicity. And these pink chaddi people are handing it to him on a silver platter. In a few days this man is a household name. Imagine what would be the state in a few months.

It’ll be the responsibilty of the media and the pink chaddi brigade if Muthalik and his bunch of miscreants turn into a strong party capable of hijacking cities and holding public life to ransom.

In addition, they had their basics wrong initially. Their blog had a picture of RSS baitthak with a heart sign. The RSS does not support Ram Sene and in fact condemns the attack. Thankfully they have removed the picture now.

I must also admit that I’m impressed by the PUB BHARO part of the campaign. Now that is something to cheer about and support. I think every woman who is seen in a pub on valentine’s day deserves a huge bouquet — just for having the guts to venture out in the face of threats.

I’ll be heading to a pub in Mangalore and if I find any woman I’m going to toast for her. This way I’m celebrating the triumph of womanhood and not providing free publicity to anyone.

On a different note, I think the pink chaddi campaign is a study for social media and viral marketing professionals. It has been a successful campaign in terms of response. More on that on my website.

And happy valentine’s day to everyone in advance!

How Different from Taliban? January 26, 2009

The first post of this year and sadly, it’s not on a very good news that has happened in Mangalore.

Anybody who is anybody (and has a TV set) would have seen the ghastly act by the right wing outfit Sri Rama Sene on Saturday, Jan 24. These hooligans barged into a pub and beat the girl customers like animals.

The incident itself is curious and steeped in intrigue.

For instance, this is probably the first time I’m seeing a planned attack with media coverage. Assaults of this nature are generally done without warning. These hooligans seem to have mediapersons along with them right from the beginning.

Which takes us to the possibility that these hooligans might have had a more than impulsive reason to attack the place. But the accounts of the “reason” have been varying: from ‘Hindu girls hanging out with Muslim boys’ to ‘a girl pulling off her top and performing striptease’ have been doing rounds.

But irrespective of the reason, Sri Rama Sene activists do not have any right to assault anybody, much less women. They must remember that they call themselves “moral police” and going by that logic they are not employees of the police force, which means they do not have the rights to assault anyone.

Talking of police, where were our cops when this incident took place? The media were informed but the cops didn’t get a sniff of an attack? That’s very strange, given the fact that our cops have proved in the past that they are not intellectually challenged.

To give them credit, they have been doing a decent job. The murder in the highly sensitive Suratkal area few days ago had all the elements to turn into a full-fledged communal riot. There was murder, revenge, politics and religion. But the cops did a great job of handling the situation and checked the spread of violence before it turned ugly.

This assault incident has again put a question mark on the integrity of our city cops. Why were they not there when media people managed to arrive in time and film it? Why the delay in filing the FIR? And why, such lax retaliation against the perpetrators?

I have not been to the pub in question till now but I do visit certain other pubs occasionally and from what I have observed the general situation concerning girls, partying and indecency is not at all bad, much less warrant such an incident.

But my other observation is that the right wingers do not need a strong reason for questioning, assaulting and bullying in general. Just like any other bully, these guys have no clue what they are or what they think they are. These guys feel that if they see a guy and girl together they have the rights to question their credentials (and they do it).

This behaviour reminds me of a certain Islamic outfit that has been doing the same kind of activities in a place called Afghanistan. I think the outfit is called Taliban.

And just like Taliban’s disgusting behaviour and principles have made Afghanistan synonymous with Taliban, there will come a time in future when our beloved Mangalore will be synonymous with Hindutva elements and their principles.

And just like Taliban and Afghanistan, Mangalore will also be shunned.

Unless these self-styled moral police are not controlled!
